Why should I even bother writing my blog? I am pretty sure no one is going to read it - or, a handful of people, at best. I am definitely not promising too much original information - after all I am, like most of us, just following footsteps of someone else before me. And still, I am deciding to do it - again, actually, after starting and stopping many times before.
It's just that now I realise: it is not about audience or novelty - it is about me and thing I want to commit to memory so much that I would be willing to spend some time writing them down. If I have learned something that I deem very useful - it should and, hopefully, will be published here - simply because it will be easier to remember this way. Not once I have noticed, that if you write something you learned down in more or less organized manner, your memory holds on to it much longer - I guess, that's the reason why they encourage us to make notes during university lectures (a practice which I mostly chose to ignore back in the day ;)).
Next thing I understand now is that nothing good comes out of forcing yourself to write posts on a daily basis. In my case, a blog is not a publicity stunt - I am not doing it to please hundreds of devout followers. So, one post per year may be just fine - as long as it is something worth remembering. I am not going to by my younger self, constantly pondering on something like "today is mostly the same as yesterday, what is there to write about?".
Last, but not the least - having a blog makes sharing useful insights much easier. I am not someone who tries to tell people how to do stuff - on the contrary, I think the best knowledge is acquire by one's own research effort. But I wouldn't mind if my writing becomes part of someone's research into the topic, and supplying a link to a blog page is much more efficient way to share then go into lengthy explanation.
By this point, I think I convinced myself to start blogging again and try to keep it up this time. And I have to confess: another reason to write this very post was to get acquainted with the Pelican static website generator - I always thought that writing pages that stay online and rarely change should be accomplished without having to deploy scripting language interpreters on the web server. For now, this generator seems to be perfectly capable of doing everything I need.
So, if anyone else out there reads this post except myself - hopefully, this one can help you justify starting your blog or keep your long-neglected blog alive ;)
